Rare Sea Monster Fish Washes Ashore In New Zealand

Talking about ancient legends of sea serpents and monster fish, this rare creature the scientist called "oarfish" has a lot to offer. A true giant in the depths of the vast ocean.

Measuring 3 meters or 10 feet long oarfish (regalecus glesne), was found ashore in New Zealand by Don Gibbs, resident of Aramoana. He saw the oarfish lying on the beach and was mesmerized of its length. Department of Conservation manager David Agnew said that for the 8 years he's been in the area working, he never saw like it before.

This 3 meters long oarfish found is considered small as it can grow up to 11 meters or 36 feet. There is a mystery lies after the discovery of this fish on the beach. It was gone and can't find it anymore. Possibilities are that it goes with the tide or somebody took the fish.

Expert says that it's not good to eat this kind of fish for its flesh is quite gelatinous. Oarfish can go below 1000 meters and sometimes goes up the water surface to feed themselves. It has also been claimed that they can shorten their length by self-amputation.
