A busy stretch of road in the Japanese city of Fukuoka has been reopened just days after the sudden emergence of a giant sinkhole which threatened to collapse nearby buildings.

The massive hole – which was roughly half the size of an Olympic swimming pool – opened up during construction work on the city’s underground network.
Local media reports said, the hole, which was 30 meters wide and 15 meters deep, took over the entire five-lane road and is believed to have been triggered by the construction of a nearby subway tunnel.
In typical Japanese manner, an earnest apology was issued immediately for the disruption, and a group of men put to work around the clock to clear up the mess.
Just two days later, there is barely any sign that the sinkhole ever existed, construction workers having filled it in with generous amounts of cement before painting over the tarmac.
Soichiro Takashima, the mayor of Fukuoka, even claimed the street was now 30 times stronger than before and said a panel of experts was being called in to establish what went wrong in the first place.
“We sincerely apologise for all the inconvenience we have caused to everyone regarding the subway construction at Fukuoka City,” said mayor Takashima in a statement.
“A safety-prioritised and quick recovery was possible thanks to all involved in the construction, through government and public cooperation, without any secondary damage. I thank everyone for all the support from the bottom of my heart,” he added
The Fukuoka workers, who filled the hole with 6,200 cubic metres of sand and cement, gathered praise on social media.
One person tweeted: “I’m surprised the road reopened in a week!”
Another said: “Impressive. That was fast.”
The most amazing thing about the sinkhole is how quickly the local government repaired it. The massive hole was filled in and the road reopened within just 48 hours.
