More than 16 years ago, “The Simpsons” predicted that Donald Trump would become US president. Flash forward to today and the business tycoon just gave his victory speech after defeating Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for the top job.
In the said episode, which aired in March 2000, Bart Simpson was shown a vision of his future, where his sister, Lisa Simpson, is the country's first “straight female president.”
Sitting inside the oval office, Lisa says: “As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.” One of her staff then tells her that the country is broke following Trump’s term.
Last March, writer Dan Greaney told The Hollywood Reporter that the episode was “a warning to America.”
“And that just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.”
The creator of the show, Matt Groening, meanwhile, told The Guardian: “We predicted that he would be president back in 2000 – but [Trump] was of course the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of at the time, and that’s still true. It’s beyond satire.”
