Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene and the couple had children together, according to the shocking findings of a book.
Speculation has been widespread for centuries that Jesus had married during his lifetime, and a new book seems to confirm this, with a few more shocking revelations.
Little is known about Jesus’ life with a small period when he was 12-years-old being mentioned in the Bible. Aside from that, the Bible only tells the story of his birth and his last few days on Earth when he was believed to be around 30.
However, Simcha Jacobovici, an Israeli-Canadian film-maker, and Barrie Wilson, a professor of religious studies in Toronto, have found an ancient text that seemingly confirms Jesus married during his life and even fathered children, as was the social norm for couples in first century Judea.
A manuscript dating back to the sixth century AD which was written on vellum, treated animal skin, and in Aramaic, the language that Jesus would have spoken, was found sitting in the British Library.
“According to the document that we uncovered, sometime during this period he became engaged, got married, had sexual relations, and produced children,” the researchers write in their book, titled The Lost Gospel.
They continue: “On a purely historical level, this really shouldn’t surprise us.
“Marriage and children were expected of a Jewish man, then and now. If he hadn’t been married, that would have caused consternation to his family, possible scandal in the community, and the New Testament certainly would have commented on it, if for no other reason than to explain and defend Jesus’ unusual behaviour.
“But now we have a document that claims that he was indeed married and fathered children. Not only this, our document indicates that for some of his original followers, Jesus’ marriage was the most important aspect of their theology.”
Jacobovici also believes that there is evidence in the Bible that suggests Jesus was married.
“Jesus is called a ‘rabbi’ in the gospels. And a rabbi, to this day, in order to have a congregation and a ministry, has to be married,” he explained.
“If he’s going to lead a congregation, he’s got to be a model for that congregation. In the first century, you reach manhood, you get married,” he added.
