A baby boy wearing a dirty diaper was left dumped in a large steel waste container and only discovered when a man thought he could hear ‘animal noises.’
The 11-month-old boy was left abandoned with rubbish in the dumpster in La Vista, Omaha.
Fortunately, a man living in a block of flats only discovered the baby when he heard what he thought was an animal making noises.
Paramedics immediately checked the crying boy for any injuries before being taken to Omaha’s Children's Hospital and Medical Centre for further checks, but the child hadn’t suffered any wounds.
Police removed the bin for forensic tests and have now launched an investigation.
Witness Emily Winkle told local media in Nebraska: “I just can't believe that someone can do that, just discard a baby like it's a piece of trash.”
Meanwhile, police in La Vista put out appeals for information after the boy was found on Wednesday evening and confirmed after about two hours that he had been identified.
KETV reported that the man who found the abandoned baby boy said he “couldn't believe” what he was seeing.
The man, who did not want to be named, said: “It's very disturbing, very upsetting and I couldn't believe what I saw.
“I went and looked on the inside of the dumpster and I saw a little hand with an empty water bottle moving.”
The little boy’s name has not yet been released and it is not known whether his parents have been informed.
The search is now on-going for the baby’s mother and five-year-old brother, who according to the police are missing.
Captain Bryan Waugh, from the La Vista Police Department, said a bigger investigation needs to be carried out.
