Fearless Diver Comes Face To Face With A Monster Snake

Since the dawn of recorded history, few species on Earth have been so feared and despised as snakes. From the book of Genesis to a 1997 blockbuster film, snakes have been depicted as cunningly diabolic, wrathful, and ruthless. But in these extraordinary images, it only proves that snakes are far more fascinating than any work of fiction.

All of these amazing pictures were photographed by either what can only be described as either the bravest or most careless scuba diver that enjoys studying snakes and reptiles in their natural habitat, and is always accompanied by a camera to catch these incredible moments.

On a recent diving expedition in Mato Grosso region of Brazil, brave Swiss diver and snake enthusiast Franco Banfi, 53, had a chance to capture the gentler side of snakes in their natural habitat, coming face to face with a 26-foot-long giant anaconda, armed only with his camera.

In this blood-chilling shot, the brave diver gets up close to an enormous anaconda that is lying on the riverbank and glistening in the ferocious tropical heat.

Thankfully for the photographer, the giant snake had just gobbled up a capybara rodent and wasn't interested in devouring him as a second course.

“As the snake had just eaten it didn't take much interest in us,” said Banfi, a father-of-two from Switzerland. “Everything is possible but I don't think it would have eaten us. I was very close, I could have touched it if I wanted to.”

He saw six different female anaconda snakes on his ten-day trip to the Mato Grosso do Sul region, right in the heart of South America. The region is known for its diverse natural beauty and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

“At the first moment it's scary because you don't know the animal and everybody says it's dangerous,” added Banfi. “But after a while you understand that nothing happens if you respect the snake.”

On this occasion, Banfi was successful with his photo shoot and came to no harm, but it is definitely not something you should try yourself as anacondas are documented man killers one they reach this size.

“I have never been so close to a snake like this before. But I think a small poisonous snake is scarier than a big one. At least you can see the anacondas clearly and know what they're doing,” said Banfi.
