Fraser Island holds the record to be the world's largest sand island. The amazing island is located along the southern coast of Queensland, Australia with an estimated area of 1840 kilometer-squared. It has a length of approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) and a width of 24 kilometers (15 miles).

Fraser Island is listed as one of the World Heritage in 1992 and its aboriginal name is K'gari. The island is a habitat for different kinds of birds, reptiles and mammals like swamp wallabies, bandicoots, sugar gliders and flying foxes.

Moreover, 18 species of snakes was found and 6 species of it were considered dangerous. In fact, the island is inhabited by humans 5000 years ago.

The famous sailor James Cook landed on the island in May 1770. It was called before as Great Sandy Island and later changed to Fraser Island, named after a shipwrecked survivor Eliza Frazer in the year 1836.

In the past years, logging and sand mining is rampant in the island but now it is protected in the Great Sandy National Park which is organized by Queensland's Environmental Protection Agency.
