Camera Lens Cover Laid Beside to Indicate Scale (AP Photo/British Museum)[/caption]They discovered the ancient footprints at an archaeological site that has generated previous discoveries of fossil bones and stone tools.
The researchers discovered the remains at low tide when the waves washed away the sand and exposed the silt below.
"At first we we're no€™t sure what we were seeing but as we removed any remaining beach sand and sponged off the seawater, it was clear that the hollows resembled prints, perhaps human footprints, and that we needed to record the surface as quickly as possible before the sea eroded it away," Dr. Nick Ashton said.
The researchers said that the footprints were consisted of at least one male and others to be female and children.
"They are clearly a family group rather than a hunting party," Dr. Ashton added.
Based on studies, the footprints size is equivalent to modern shoe size of UK 8. The height is estimated to be about 2 feet 11 inches to 5 feet 6 inches. Relatively similar to the height of modern humans.
In addition, the other ancient footprints found are at Ileret and Koobi Fora in Kenya and about 1.5 million years and at Laetoli in Tanzania at around 3.5 million years.
