Facebook CEO and wife top the list of the most philanthropic Americans in 2013.
Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan, both 29 years of age, made history as the youngest generous couple ever to top the list of the most philanthropic Americans in 2013 with a donation of 18 million shares of Facebook stock and valued at more than $970 million to a Silicon Valley non-profit foundation in December.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy has reported that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's donation was the biggest charitable gift on the public record in 2013 and places the young couple at the top of the magazine's annual list of 50 most philanthropic Americans in 2013.
The gift was valued at $1 billion at the time of the transaction when Facebook's stock was trading at $55.12 and the 18 million share gift to the foundation is becoming a yearly tradition for the philanthropic couple, who were also the second-most generous donors of 2012.
Zuckerberg and Chan may prefer sponsoring education and healthcare related programs even though it’s still unknown of where the new funds will be put to use.
In January of this year, the philanthropic couple allotted $5 million from their previous gift to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation to help out the Ravenswood Family Health Center construct a new health center in East Palo Alto, California.
“Providing high quality healthcare for everyone is important for building a strong community,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.
