This latest discovery of a rare blue diamond is extremely extraordinary and awesomely beautiful.
Petra Diamonds, operator of the Cullinan mine located about 40km (25 miles) north-east of Pretoria stated that the 29.6 carat blue diamond they recovered was the most exceptional stone throughout company's operation. They also found a 25.5 carat diamond which sold for $16.9 million (£10.3 million) in 2013.
"The stone is an outstanding vivid blue with extraordinary saturation, tone and clarity, and has the potential to yield a polished stone of great value and importance," Petra Diamonds said in an interview.
The Cullinan mine is a diamond haven because the deep-blue diamond that set the world record for the value-per-carat was also unearth in the said mine with a price of $10.8 million in 2012.
An identical 26.6-carat blue rough diamond was also recovered in May 2009 and was priced just under $10 million at Sotheby's auction.
Another proof that the Cullinan mine is an amazing pit of diamonds because the Star of Africa blue-diamond, the world's second largest cut diamond was also dug there in 1905.
The 530 carat pear-shaped stone was presented to King Edward VII and became part of the British crown jewels.
