Cinderella is one of the most well-known fairy tale stories around the world.
I think most of you have heard stories about Cinderella. It is about a kind young lady, who suffers at the hands of her step family after the death of her mother.
Since Cinderella is a popular Disney story, it has between 350 and 1500 different versions in the world today. We have all known that Cinderella has a glass slipper that causes the female lead to be recognized for her true worth.
But did you know that Cinderella’s shoes is not made from Glass but made from a Squirrel Fur?
It is because Charles Perrault, who also wrote a familiar version of the story in the 17th century, misheard the french word Vair means Squirrel Fur from the similar sounding Verre which means Glass.
China has the earliest recorded version of the tale Cinderella. The original Chinese version “Yeh-Shen” are made of gold thread with solid gold soles.
While in the Scottish version “Rashie-Coat” are made of rushes. But during the medieval French tale, a version by Perrault, her shoes are described as Pantoufles de Vair means slippers of squirrel’s fur.
In Perrault version of Cinderella, he introduced the fairy godmother, the animal servants and the pumpkin carriage. He added these extra things for effect. Some people think that he confused “Vair” with “Verre” which would explain how the slipper came to be made of glass.
It is said that the error occurred before Perrault and he merely repeated it and others think that glass slippers were his own idea and that he intended them all along.
Today, the tale of Cinderella has been retold in books, musicals, novels and movies.
